2013 Promises New Challenges and New Opportunities …
Focus on the opportunities … We’ll help you at the AIDC New Year’s Party Thursday, January 17, 6-9pm.
We’re gathering at the Sheraton National Hotel just outside DC off interstate 395. Overlooking the Pentagon, the hotel provides stunning panoramic views of the nation's capitol.
The evening will include a sumptuous dinner, open bar (for the first hour), and power networking time. During the event, we’ll also introduce your new board of directors and officially install them into their roles for the new year.
Come with your appetite for good food, interesting conversation and inquisitive ear. You are bound to pick up some good tips and few leads that will help you find the opportunities in 2013.
Dear Chapter Members,
I just wanted to write a short note at year’s end to thank you for the opportunity you gave me to be President of the Chapter in 2012. I truly enjoyed my time and believe with the help of the officers and Board members that we accomplished some things that will positively impact the Chapter for years to come.
Among other things we put the Chapter on a more sustainable financial footing. Our ability to achieve positive financial results will, however, be heavily dependent on your attendance at our course and seminar offerings. Last year I had to cancel a few seminars due to low enrollment. We are not the only Chapter who has been experiencing low enrollment. I know from speaking with many of you that we are prone to take the path of least resistance when considering how to complete our CE and other educational requirements. Many are taking courses and seminars on-line or with other providers. I understand in this busy world that we all need to find time efficient ways to complete these requirements. However, we really need you to participate in our offerings if we are to succeed financially.
At this point I would also like to highlight the fact that our educational offerings are the best out there. Being a better valuation professional requires keeping up with current teaching and the best way to do that is by taking AI developed courses and seminars. Over the last few years your leadership has been meeting regularly with the Maryland and Virginia Chapters to coordinate and develop the best offerings for all of our members. If you don’t find offerings on our web site that you like, check out other nearby Chapters web sites. We purposely developed a wide range of different offerings to better serve all of our members.
I would also like you all to consider stepping up to the plate in a couple of areas. First, we will have a couple of Board positions open up beginning in 2014. As past President and Chair of the nominating committee I would invite anyone who has an interest in serving to contact me directly (contact information below). Second, as you all know the Appraisal Institute is changing to a Professional Society model. As a part of this transition, and a very important part, we have started the new “Candidate for Designation” program. To date some 41 of the Chapter’s previous Associate Members have signed up to be Candidates for Designation. To support the Candidates, National will be implementing an “Advisor” program. Advisors will be designated members who will be assigned to Candidates to help them progress to designation. To date we have 13 designated members in the DC Metro Chapter who have signed up to be advisors, we need more. I would ask all members to consider signing up to be Advisors. Information relating to the Advisor program can be found on National’s web site.
As I prepare to become “Immediate Past President” of the Chapter I would also like to let you know that management of the Chapter is in capable hands. We are very fortunate to have Peter and Peggy Houstle, and their company Mariner Management, handling our management needs. They do a great job and provide invaluable guidance.
Again, thanks so much for the opportunity you all afforded me to be President.
I hope you all have a very enjoyable Holiday season with your friends and family
See you at the January 17th installation and dinner meeting.
