Real Estate Construction Cost Update - Register Now and SAVE!

Wednesday, June 9, 2010
Crowne Plaza Tysons Corner
1960 Chain Bridge Rd. * McLean, VA 22102

Join the DC Metro Area Chapter of the Appraisal Institute for an update on construction costs and trends in the Metro DC area. Deanna Andre will give an overview of the Marshall Valuation cost service including how to use the cost guide, how the data is assembled and reported and any recently developed applications available in addition to the hard copy (handbook).  She will be followed by four local builder/contractors who will discuss the construction market for their sector (commercial, institutional, residential, land development).

Discussion points will include:

  • recent direction in costs for both materials and labor and projections for the future
  • costs to comply with local, state and federal regulations
  • permit and utility connection fees
  • typical proffers and concessions
  • differences between jurisdictions
  • entrepreneurial profit expectations
  • “rules of thumb” for estimating indirect (soft) costs, site work and hard costs for construction of certain building types and
  • green buildings (sustainable design) and where construction is heading in the future

Don't miss this unique opportunity to hear from these key players, meet appraisal professionals from all around the region and enjoy a great meal!

AIDC Launches Associate Guidance Program

To: All Associate Members of the D.C. Metro Chapter of the Appraisal Institute
From: Your Board of Directors and Leadership
Re: Welcome
We have started an Associate Guidance program to help those of you who are actively seeking designation.  If you have not been contacted by a member of the Associate Guidance Committee, you will be soon.  In the meantime, if you have any questions or need any assistance feel free to call or contact Donald Boucher, SRA at 202-744-3246 or
email or Steve Santora, MAI at 202-303-3028 or email who are co-chairs of the committee.  If we do not have an answer for you, we will do our best to get you to the right person or find the answer.
Also, we all would very much like to meet you.  Please see if you can come to our dinner meeting on June 9th where we will also have a short educational program dealing with Cost approach issues.  It should be a great program and would give us an opportunity to meet you and provide you an opportunity to meet both Associated and Designated members.  Having relationships with other Associates seeking designation can help a lot, because you are all dealing with the same issues and can support each other.
Hope to see you soon and help you get your designations.  An Appraisal Institute designation is a valuable thing in this evolving valuation world.
Have a great day!

Letters to U.S. Congress on Home Valuation Code of Conduct

We have become aware that a real estate trade organization is asking Chapters of the Appraisal Institute to sign a letter in support of single provision found in H.R. 4173, the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, relating to the Home Valuation Code of Conduct (HVCC). While the Appraisal Institute supports this particular provision, our goal is to seek the passage of all appraisal modernization provisions in H.R. 4173 in the final House-Senate Conference Report. Simply supporting one provision undermines this goal and all the hard work Rep. Paul Kanjorski (D-PA) has put into passing appraisal reform. Therefore, we ask that you do not sign this letter or forward any action alerts should you be asked.
We will be in touch in the near future about how best to help the effort to secure passage of appraisal reform in the final Conference Report. If you have any questions, please contact Brian Rodgers a 202-298-5597, or
