Event Recap: Real Estate Market Update – The Glum & Bright

Five speakers shared their views on the economic outlook for the real estate market in the Metro DC area offering a couple bright spots in an otherwise glum report. The presenters delivered an overall economic review as well as individual reports for the land, multi-family/condo, retail and office segments of the real estate market covering current inventory, projected supply and demand and investment dynamics for each market segment.

The two bright spots were:

  • Demand for appraisals should be strong in 2009 as banks and the government seek to determine the true value of real estate in the area.
  • There appears to be an uptick in land purchases signaling a market perception that demand will rebound in late '09 or early '10.

For more information on key segments, view the speakers handouts:
General Economic Outlook from Kevin Thorpe, Vice President and Director of Research, Cassidy & Pinkard;
Multi-Family/Condo Market from Grant Montgomery, Vice President, Delta Associates;
Retail Market from William Kent, Executive Vice President, CB Richard Ellis; and
Office Market from Eric Berkman, Senior Vice President, Institutional Investment Group, Grubb & Ellis Company.

Appraisal Institute Board Votes Down NAR Affiliation

In a November 6 vote, the Appraisal Institute Board of Directors voted not to pursue affiliation with the National Association of Realtors. The vote, which occurred during the Board’s fall meeting in San Antonio, Texas, follows year-long meetings between the organizations during which possible terms and conditions were discussed. In the end, though, the two organizations could not come to agreement on how best to proceed, and the Board determined it is in the best interest of the Appraisal Institute for the Appraisal Institute and NAR to remain as separate, unaffiliated organizations. Link for the full story.
